What travelers are saying
"Drifting Palancar Reef in Cozumel was magical. Eagle rays, turtles and a school of barracuda in 20 minutes. Crystal clear visibility and the dive master found a tiny seahorse on the wall. Best two-tank dive of the trip."
"Cavern diving Dos Ojos near Tulum felt like swimming through a cathedral. Sun beams cut through the freshwater, stalactites overhead and the halocline at the bottom blurred everything for a second. Magical 45-minute dive."
"Snorkeling next to a 7 meter whale shark in Holbox was unforgettable. The biologist guide kept us in groups of 2 with the shark and explained the migration. Saw 4 sharks in 3 hours plus dolphins on the way back."
Cozumel sits on the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef, the second largest in the world. Constant currents bring nutrient rich water, so visibility runs 30 to 40 meters year round and reefs like Palancar and Santa Rosa Wall offer drift dives with eagle rays, turtles, nurse sharks and walls dropping past 100 meters.
A standard two-tank Cozumel reef dive costs $80 to $130 USD with tanks, weights and dive master included. BCD and regulator rental adds about $20. Cenote dives in Tulum or Playa del Carmen cost $150 to $200 for two cavern dives because of the longer drive and specialized cavern guide.
For cavern dives at Dos Ojos, Chac Mool or Pit you need PADI Open Water minimum and most operators want at least 20 logged dives. For cave dives past the daylight zone you need full Cave Diver certification. Snorkelers can join most cenote tours without any certification.
Whale shark season in the Caribbean runs from mid June to mid September with peak sightings in July and August off Holbox and Isla Mujeres. The Sea of Cortez season at La Paz runs October to April. Both are snorkel only by Mexican law, no scuba allowed with whale sharks.
Bring a 3mm wetsuit (5mm for cenotes), mask, fins and reef safe sunscreen if you have them. Tanks, weights, BCD and regulator are usually rented at the shop for $15 to $25. Cenote dives need a primary dive light. Many divers prefer to bring their own mask for fit and dive computer for safety.
Stay on Cozumel island if reef diving is the main goal: Palancar, Santa Rosa Wall and Columbia Reef are 20 minutes by boat. Stay in Playa del Carmen or Tulum if cenote diving and Riviera Maya beach time matter more. The Cozumel ferry from Playa runs hourly so day trips are easy.
Book at least one to two weeks ahead in high season (December to April and July to August). Whale shark snorkel boats sell out 4 weeks in advance in July. Cenote cavern dives at Dos Ojos and Pit have daily limits and book up 7 to 10 days ahead. Instant confirmation on all bookings.
Yes. Most tours offer free cancellation up to 24 hours before the start time for a full refund. Cancellations made less than 24 hours before departure are non-refundable. Check the specific tour for details.
