Whale Shark Mexico: When, Where and How to Swim with Them
Caribbean Season: Holbox and Isla Mujeres
Mid-June to mid-September is when whale sharks aggregate east of Holbox to feed on tuna spawn. The aggregation, called La Afuera, is the largest known in the world (often 200 to 400 sharks). Boats leave from Holbox island at 7 am and Isla Mujeres at 7:30 am, the boat ride is 1 to 2 hours and you spend 2 hours in the water taking turns swimming with the sharks (max 5 to 8 sharks per boat). Tours from Cancun, Playa del Carmen and Tulum exist but add 2 to 3 hours of round-trip transfer to that day.
Pacific Season: La Paz, Sea of Cortez
From October to April juvenile whale sharks (3 to 7 meters) gather in the La Paz Bay to feed on plankton. The encounters are intimate compared to Holbox: typically 3 to 5 whale sharks per outing, often visible right from the boat without needing to motor far. La Paz tours leave at 8 am, last 4 hours and include marine biologist briefing, snorkel gear and ceviche lunch. Costs run 110 to 160 USD per person. Bonus: La Paz combines well with Cabo Pulmo shark reef diving and Espiritu Santo island sea lion snorkel.
Rules, Etiquette and Safety
By Mexican federal law (NOM-029-SEMARNAT-2006) only 2 swimmers and 1 guide are allowed in the water with a single shark at a time. No scuba, no fins on the head of the shark, no flash photography and no touching. Tours that violate these rules can have their license revoked. Wear a 3 mm shorty wetsuit even in summer because the boat ride to the aggregation can be cold. Sea sickness can hit because the open water site is 2 hours offshore: take Dramamine 1 hour before boarding.
Holbox vs La Paz: Which One to Pick
Pick Holbox if you want the spectacular numbers and you can travel in July or August. The aggregation is unique in the world and you might see 30 sharks at the surface at once. Pick La Paz if you want a more intimate experience with fewer crowds, you travel between October and April, or you also want to dive Cabo Pulmo shark reef and Sea of Cortez sea lions. Costs are similar. Holbox tours add 1 to 2 hours of round-trip transfer for the boat to the aggregation. La Paz boats reach the sharks faster.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I scuba dive with whale sharks in Mexico?
No. Mexican law strictly prohibits scuba with whale sharks. Snorkel only, in groups of 2 swimmers per shark with a marine biologist guide.
What month is the best for Holbox whale sharks?
Late July through mid-August is peak: highest shark numbers and warmest water. The season opens June 15 and closes September 15 by federal regulation.
Are kids allowed on whale shark tours?
Yes from age 5 if they snorkel comfortably. Holbox boats can be rough so younger kids may struggle. La Paz boats and water are calmer and better for families.
