The three dive resort regions of Mexico
Cozumel is the classic: a small island where dive boats leave from hotel piers and the best sites are 10–30 minutes away. The Riviera Maya trades the pier-side convenience for variety, reef in the morning, cenote cavern dives in the afternoon. Baja California Sur (Cabo San Lucas, La Paz, Cabo Pulmo) is the big-animal coast: sea lions, mobula swarms, whale sharks in season.
What stay and dive packages cost
| Base | Per person / night | Typically includes | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cozumel dive resort ★ | $150–$300 | Room + 2 boat dives/day + tanks | Reef and wall addicts |
| Riviera Maya dive hotel | $130–$250 | Room + reef dives, cenotes extra | Mixing reef and cenotes |
| Baja dive lodge | $200–$350 | Room + 2 dives/day + park fees | Big animal encounters |
Packages usually price nitrox, gear rental and marine park bracelets separately, ask before comparing totals. Non-diving companions typically pay 30–40 percent less.
Resort, independent booking or liveaboard?
Book a package if you'll dive 5+ days in one place, the per-dive discount is real. Book separately if you want to mix operators, add cenote days, or your hotel is already fixed: a two-tank Cozumel reef dive runs $80–$130 with any operator. Book a liveaboard only for Socorro: the Revillagigedo islands need 8–9 day itineraries from Cabo San Lucas ($3,200–$4,500) and reward you with giant mantas and 10+ shark species. There is no Cozumel liveaboard, the island's sites are all within day-boat range.
Booking checklist
- Confirm dives are 2-tank boat dives, not shore dives, and morning departures
- Check the house reef and pier: in Cozumel, southern hotels are closest to Palancar
- Ask about unused-dive refunds for weather cancellations (norte winds happen November to February)
- Verify nitrox pricing if you're certified, some resorts include it free
- Season check: whale sharks (June–September), bull sharks (November–March), Socorro (November–May)

Frequently asked questions
A stay and dive package bundles accommodation with a fixed number of boat dives, usually 2 tanks per day, tanks and weights included. In Mexico they typically cost $150 to $350 per person per night depending on the resort tier and season.
Cozumel has the highest concentration of dedicated dive resorts thanks to the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef minutes offshore. The Riviera Maya (Playa del Carmen and Tulum) adds cenote diving to reef trips, and Cabo San Lucas and La Paz in Baja serve the big-animal season.
No. Cozumel diving is all day-boat based because the sites sit 10 to 30 minutes from the piers. Mexican liveaboards operate in the Pacific: the Socorro (Revillagigedo) itineraries depart from Cabo San Lucas, running 8 to 9 day trips for giant mantas, sharks and dolphins.
Usually yes for 5 or more diving days, packages discount the per-dive price by 15 to 30 percent. For shorter trips, or if you want to mix operators and cenotes, booking your hotel and dives separately gives more flexibility for a similar total.
