The five must-dive sites of Cozumel
Palancar Reef is the crown jewel: 5 km of coral gardens with eagle rays, hawksbill turtles and the resident green moray. Four named sections cover all skill levels from Open Water (Gardens) to Advanced (Bricks).
Santa Rosa Wall drops vertically from 18 to 80 meters. Drift current carries you along the wall while you watch nurse sharks rest in shallow caves and queen triggerfish dart between barrel sponges.
Columbia Deep features massive coral pinnacles rising 25 meters off a sandy bottom at 30 meters. Splendid toadfish (endemic to Cozumel) live here and reef sharks patrol the deeper sections.
Punta Sur has the Devils Throat, a spiral cavern dropping from 25 to 40 meters and exiting through a sun-beam chimney. Advanced and cavern divers only.
Paradise Reef sits in 12 to 15 meters with gentle current, perfect for Discover Scuba intros and the second tank for new Open Water divers.

How to pick a Cozumel dive operator
- 5-Star PADI Dive Center rating over a 3-Star
- Diver to dive master ratio of 4:1 or smaller on the boat
- Late departure (8:30 to 9:00 am) to give Palancar enough sun for the swim-throughs
- Free Nitrox on day 2 if you dive multi-day, ask before booking
- Avoid the cheapest deal: gear maintenance and instructor experience matter for safety
Best time of year
April through June and October through November are the best months: warm water (28 C), low rain and calm seas. December to March has cooler air (still 27 C water) and the famous splendid toadfish breeding season at Columbia. Avoid September peak hurricane risk.

Frequently asked questions
Palancar Reef is the most famous, with four named sections (Gardens, Caves, Bricks, Horseshoe) running 5 km along the southwest coast. Santa Rosa Wall is a close second for its vertical wall and drift current.
Standard rate is 80 to 130 USD with tanks, weights and dive master. BCD and regulator rental adds 15 to 25 USD. Most operators include lunch on the boat for full-day trips.
Open Water is enough for Palancar Gardens and Paradise Reef. Santa Rosa Wall, Columbia Deep and Punta Sur are technically Advanced because of depth past 25 meters.
