Cavern vs cave: the critical difference
Cavern diving means staying within the daylight zone where natural sunlight is always visible from the entrance. Maximum penetration is 60 meters from the surface and there must always be a clear unobstructed exit. Open to PADI Open Water with at least 20 logged dives.
Cave diving means going past the daylight zone into total darkness with overhead environment. Requires full Cave Diver certification, double tanks, primary and backup lights, and a continuous guideline. Never follow a friend past the warning markers without training.

Safety rules every cenote diver must follow
- Never lose sight of natural sunlight in cavern dives
- Use the rule of thirds: one third of gas in, one third out, one third reserve
- Always carry a primary dive light, not just a backup torch
- Use the modified frog kick to avoid silting out the bottom
- Stay close to the cavern guide and never separate from the guideline
